However, that's not all! We are very aware of the "wood-wide web" that connects all the trees in the Copse. Fungi that live in the earth, sending their mycelium to reach from tree root to tree root, enabling the trees to communicate and pass nutrients between each other. Amazing! This means we will be leaving some dead wood, both standing and fallen, for these amazing life forms to feed on. This is yet another reason to stick to footpaths.
Fungi form an important function in the wood and provide nutrients to plants and creatures. Please be respectful of them and do not kick them over or off the trees. Enjoy them! They are simply fascinating! What you see is just the fruiting body and so it is important we leave them to do their job.
If you can help us with fungi identification, we'd love to hear from you!
Also, we have some wonderful lichen - a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. The bearded ones are evidence of clean air apparently.
